MakeMasks is offering free hand-made masks to organizations that serve vulnerable, oft-forgotten populations who face financial or access barriers to resources that would allow them to adequately distance and protect themselves during the crisis.

Our Policies Have Changed:

You are eligible if:

  • You are a facility or organization specializing in elder care, including in-home skilled nursing, nursing/care homes, and hospice

  • You are a public or private social service serving vulnerable populations such as community shelter, rehabilitation, disability assistance, food bank, soup kitchen, urban outreach.

  • Your order will be matched to makers within your region, the ability to accept shipped donations is ideal

  • Makers will send their masks as they complete batches of at least 10, you will get multiple packages until your order is filled.

  • Based on the number of orders and the availability of sewists and supplies in your area, it may take some time to fill your order.

Since we strive to connect masks directly to the facilities and organizations who will be using them, we cannot support secondary distribution via good samaritans

Please note that homemade masks are included by the CDC in their Crisis Capacity Strategies section, but are not a suitable substitute for N95 masks or other medical grade PPE.

Per the CDC: “In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.”

Masks are not sterile. The masks are made by a nation-wide collective of volunteers. We have requested that all materials be freshly washed, and that makers practice good flu hygiene during production. Recipients should sterilize masks using autoclaves or other procedures to meet your organization’s use standards.

The future depends on what you do today.
